The Smiths Bay Drowning

This is a rather interesting but very tragic story.

At the Macaulay Heritage Park  in Picton, Ontario, Canada is the old Church of St. Mary Magdalene Church (now the Prince Edward County Museum). The adjoining cemetery contains the gravestones of a number of children with the surname Pierce who all died at the same time on July 8, 1866.

Anyone seeing all those names will be puzzled as to the cause, so here is the rest of the story.

This handwritten poem is in the handwriting of Edna Viola Pierce (nee McCornock), October 10, 1891-April 26, 1980. The poem is dated August 26, 1866, Author Unknown.
